Active all year round, mice are small mammals and one of the most common pest species in the UK. Mice are part of British wildlife but when they take up residence with you, they can be a cause for concern. There are two common types of mice in the UK to be aware of, the house mouse and the field/wood mouse. The house mouse has a typical mouse profile with light brown and grey fur compared to the field mouse, identifiable by its sandy brown fur and larger eyes and ears with a longer tail than the house mouse.
Like rats, they pose a health risk and need to be treated as soon as possible and Ben’s Bugs can do just that!

why we control mice
Although mice can be considered cute by some people, they are a public health pest and can cause serious harm. Mice have been known to spread diseases such as Salmonella and Listeria to humans through their urine and droppings. Mice also commonly build nests near food sources because of their eating habits which can put anyone with an infestation at risk of food poisoning. They are also capable of causing a lot of property damage with electric cables, water and gas pipes and woodwork may all be seriously damaged.
Common Signs of Mice
- Droppings
- Grease marks around skirting boards and walls
- Scratching – Most active at night therefore listen for noises under floorboards, ceiling, basements and lofts at night time
- Nesting – shredding of soft materials such as napkins or paper
- Sighting – If you are seeing activity, it is likely the rest of the family aren’t far away!
- Ammonia like smell – Mice frequently urinate and can create an ammonia like smell
